Most young boys (and some adventurous girls) play with Toy Soldiers; some never stop! I'm proud to say that I am one that never has stopped. Toy Soldiers, painting the figures, history and miniature wargaming is what this site is all about. May the God who gives encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Great pics Neil - especially the Zouaves on the bridge.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I think the marching Zouaves with kepis are some of the best figures Old Glory has done for the ACW. This unit has actually "snuck" into a few Franco-Prussian games as well!
DeleteGreat game and great looking figures, Neil. Fire and Fury was THE ruleset where wargaming properly started for me. Learning with DBA/DBM was for me a joyless affair. Other UK rules seemed to be poor photocopies or horribly complicated. Playing a game with Fire and Fury changed everything. Rules could be interesting, fun to read and inspiring. Those gorgeous tables with great terrain - and it showed that I could make it too. Painting tips..it had it all. I love those rules. I play them rarely now but their importance means that I shall never sell them and I still enjoy dipping into those pages from time to time.
ReplyDeleteJason, I know what you mean. I enjoyed painting the armies for DBA/DBM but the games were colorless and repetitive. I was on the search for a big battle game and actually met the authors at Cold Wars back in 1993 and I watched a demonstration and was hooked. That along with Age of Reason got me back on big battle games.
DeleteLovely troops. There's a good following of these rules here too. They game monthly at Fort Steilacoom down the road from me.
ReplyDeleteDean, I know I've told you a million times, but I really miss being stationed at Lewis and actually lived in Steilacoom when I was stationed there. Sounds like a great vibrant community of gamers in the Pacific Northwest.
DeleteSplendid colors, great looking minis!
ReplyDeleteOne of the items I like about the ACW is that it is a great period to introduce new figures as the "basic" units are easy to paint. I even told one guy, who hates painting, to just spray paint his Confederates grey, paint the faces, hands, rifles and packs and voila - instant army. They looked great in mass at gaming distance. Once you get a little better, go for that occassional Zouave unit or paint a mix and match Confederate unit. Lots of fun!
DeleteHappy memories of a year playing F&F weekly back in the early 90's.
