2018 Third Quarter Update

At the end of the Third Quarter here is the 2018 plan update:

1. Two units of Scottish infantry for the English Civil War.  They will portray both Covenanters and Royalists for Montrose's army.  All my English Civil War forces are based for Victory Without Quarter which I think are the best ECW rules out there and they are absolutely free. Finished the Pike Block!!! I really blame my lack of progress on The Ministry of Gentlemanly Warfare's book In Her Majesty's Name.

2. Two units of Scottish cavalry that will both Covenanters and Royalists.  Yeah. Not sure it is going to happen this year with the painting for the eBay business.
3. One Scottish artillery gun.  Sometime this year?  Please see above.
4. French Foreign Legion company for In Her Majesty's NameDone!  Huzzah!

5. Sky Pirates company for In Her Majesty's NameAnother triumph and complete.  Now all they need is a ship . . .

Painting Distractions:

Okay, this is really my fault but I love the game In Her Majesty's Name.  Here are the companies I did during the Second Quarter:

Dorothy Gale and her Untouchables. I actually did them in the Second Quarter but forgot to add it to the update.

 The Bounty Hunter

The Templars - Wild West Style

The Wicked Witch of the West . . .

. . . and her reinforcements of a wolf pack.

Miskatonic University (a gift for Honorable Son #1 (The Librarian))

Senegalese Tirailleurs for the French Foreign Legion Company

Professor Moriarty

Gaming Distractions (yeah, right)I was fortunate to play a Campaign series of In Her Majesty's Name against Honorable #5 (BWAH HAH HAH) as the Witch King of Sokar against various good guys.  The campaign officially ended as a tie but I must give the moral victory to the Witch King (which is safely locked up on the island of Astragard).

The Witch King of Sokar

I was also fortunate to play an English Civil War game using Victory with no Quarter against Honorable Son #2 (The Captain) who politely handed my butt to me in this thrilling battle.

The Battle of Upper Downington

Toy Soldiers and Dining Room Battles Painting: I did not do as much painting for eBay this quarter (see painting distraction above!) but I did knock out some:

 French Colonial Marines

Saxon Warband for SAGA

 British Highlanders

Lady Poppington's Expedition

Matabele Kingdom

German Sniper Team and Grenade Launcher

So the real question is:  Will I finish anything else in items #1, 2 and 3 before the end of the year?

IHMN: The Wolves of Oz

The Wicked Witch of the West sees the travelers approaching with her one telescopic eye. She sends a pack of wolves to tear them to pieces . . .

Reinforcements for the Wicked Witch of the Wests' Adventuring company for In Her Majesty's Name come from Games Workshop's Space Wolves Fenrisian Wolf Pack.  Though Games Workshop has priced themselves out of my range, I was able to get a good deal on a box of these hard plastic figures on eBay.

If you are going to be a wicked witch, you might as well have some wolves that live up to your reputation. These furry critters are big, much larger than your "average" heroic scale 28 mm figure. Yep, it's good to be bad.

The boxed set comes with 5 wolves, are easy to put together and surprisingly (at least for me) easy to paint as I don't have a lot of experience painting animals. As can been seen, each wolf figure is different.

The stats I'm using for them will be the Siberian Wolves from the first supplement Heroes, Villains and Fiends.

IHMN: Professor Moriarity

"But in calling Moriarty a criminal you are uttering libel in the eyes of the law—and there lie the glory and the wonder of it! The greatest schemer of all time, the organizer of every devilry, the controlling brain of the underworld, a brain which might have made or marred the destiny of nations—that's the man! But so aloof is he from general suspicion, so immune from criticism, so admirable in his management and self-effacement, that for those very words that you have uttered he could hale you to a court and emerge with your year's pension as a solatium for his wounded character. Is he not the celebrated author of The Dynamics of an Asteroid, a book which ascends to such rarefied heights of pure mathematics that it is said that there was no man in the scientific press capable of criticizing it? Is this a man to traduce? Foulmouthed doctor and slandered professor—such would be your respective roles! That's genius, Watson." — Holmes, The Valley of Fear.

Professor Moriarty is highly ruthless, shown by his steadfast vow to Sherlock Holmes that "if you are clever enough to bring destruction upon me, rest assured that I shall do as much to you".  Moriarty is categorized by Holmes as an extremely powerful criminal mastermind who is purely adept at committing any atrocity to perfection without losing any sleep over it. It is stated in The Final Problem that Moriarty does not directly participate in the activities he plans, but only orchestrates the events. As Holmes stated above, what makes Moriarty so dangerous is his extremely cunning intellect.

 Colonel Sebastian Moran

Colonel Sebastian Moran was educated at Eton College and the University of Oxford before embarking upon a military career. Formerly of the 1st Bangalore Pioneers (Madras), he served in the Jowaki Expedition of 1877-1878 and in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, seeing action at the Battle of Char Asiab, 6 October 1879 (for which he was mentioned in dispatches); the Battle of Sherpur, 23 December 1879; and at Kabul.

A devoted sportsman and highly skilled shot, he was author of the books Heavy Game of the Western Himalayas in 1881 and Three Months in the Jungle in 1884, and reportedly once "crawled down a drain after a wounded man-eating tiger". Although there was no open scandal after his turning to crime, he was obliged to retire from the army and return to London. Outwardly respectable, with an address in Conduit Street, Mayfair, and membership of the Anglo-Indian Club, the Tankerville Club and The Bagatelle Card Club, he was nevertheless recruited by Professor Moriarty, and serves as his chief of staff. Ultimately he is used solely for assassinations that required his peculiar skill with the rifle; Holmes mentions the killing of a Mrs. Stuart in 1887 which he suspects (but cannot prove) Moran was involved in.

Captain Harold Cold

Harold Cold was raised by an abusive father and took refuge with his grandfather, who worked in an ice truck. When his grandfather died, Cold grew tired of his father's abuse and set out to start a criminal career. Cold joined up with a group of small-time thieves and in planning out a robbery, each was issued a gun of advanced design and a visor to protect their eyes against the flashes of gunfire.
As he was finishing his part of the robbery, a security guard surprised Cold. Intending to use his gun only to scare the guard, he inadvertently pulled the trigger and discovered that his weapon had been altered in a way he had never imagined. The moisture in the air around the guard froze. Intrigued by this twist of fate, Snart donned a long jacket and the aforementioned visor and declared himself to be Captain Cold - the man who mastered absolute zero.

IHMN: Reinforcements for the French Foreign Legion, The Senegalese Tiralleurs

Lieutenant-Colonel Jacques Duchesne leads a section of the Senegalese Tiralleurs.

The Senegalese Tirailleurs (French: Tirailleurs Sénégalais) were a corps of colonial infantry in the French Army. They were initially recruited from Senegal, French West Africa and subsequently throughout Western, Central and Eastern Africa: the main sub-Saharan regions of the French colonial empire. The noun tirailleur, which translates variously as "skirmisher", "rifleman", or "sharpshooter", was a designation given by the French Army to indigenous infantry recruited in the various coloniesand overseas possessions of the French Empire during the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Senegalese Tirailleurs were formed in 1857 by Louis Faidherbe, governor general of French West Africa, because he lacked sufficient French troops to control the territory and meet other requirements of the first phase of colonisation. The formal decree for the formation of this force was signed on 21 July 1857 in Plombières-les-Bains by Napoleon III. Recruitment was later extended to other French colonies in Africa. During its early years the corps included some former slaves bought from West African slave-owners as well as prisoners of war. Subsequent recruitment was either by voluntary enlistment or on occasion by an arbitrary form of conscription. In the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War the Senegalese tirailleurs continued to provide the bulk of French garrisons in West and Central Africa.

IHMN: Lady Prudence Fiona Throckwaddle and the Anti-Slavery League

None strike fear in the heart of the Zanzabari and Arabs slavers (other than Lord Greystoke) than Lady Prudence Fiona Throckwaddle, of the North Piddle Throckwaddle's. A formidable woman (just ask her deceased husband, Lord Throckwaddle) she has lead numerous anti-slavery raids and most famously, she guided the raid at Iringa, which liberated more than 700 slaves. Though not popular with the German Authorities in the area (the infamous tea party incident with Herr Doktor Professor Oberst (Ret.) Sanders) they grudging allow her much latitude in her operations as she is a signatory of the "Alliance" in the Secret War.  Baroness Grete Wölfflin has been assigned by Herr Doktor Professor Oberst (Ret.) Sanders as the Imperial German Liaison to the Anti-Slavery Leauge.

Eunice Montjoy pulls her pistol to the left of Lady Throckwaddle while Lady Imogen Millais-Scott walks up with her sword cane.

Lady Prudence Fiona Throckwaddle - Scourge of the Zanzibari and Arab Slavers.

Many a man has regretted getting in the way of Lady Prudence Fiona Throckwaddle of the North Piddle Throckwaddles.  Not only is she from North Piddle and exhibits the eccentricities of that area, but is supposedly the amour of one Captain Nemo. Famous for the tea parties she throws, there is still some controversy about the fried chicken that was served when Herr Doktor Professor Oberst (Ret.) Sanders attended.
