IHMN: Miskatonic University

When evil inter-dimensional alien bad meanies go bump in the night, there is a Ivy League University that can help!

Miskatonic University is a university located in Arkham, a town in Essex County, Massachusetts. It is named after the Miskatonic River which flows near the campus.  Miskatonic University is a highly prestigious university, on par with Harvard University, and that Harvard and Miskatonic are the two most popular schools for the children of the Massachusetts “Old Gentry”. Miskatonic University is famous for its collection of occult books. The library holds one of the very few genuine copies of the Necronomicon. Other tomes include the Unaussprechlichen Kulten by Friedrich von Junzt and the fragmentary Book of Eibon. The faculty and staff are some of the most respected men and women in their fields; however, very few know that they are also part of the secret war against numerous inter-dimensional beings that seek to destroy and repopulate Earth . . . and the occasional human bad guy has been stopped by these academicians.

Dr. Henry Armitage

Dr. Henry Armitage is the head librarian at Miskatonic University. As a young man, he graduated from Miskatonic in 1841 and went on to obtain his doctorate from Princeton University and his Doctor of Letters degree at Johns Hopkins University. He is one of the few men that can read the Necronomicon and not go insane.  He is most famous for leading the expedition that destroyed "The Dunwich Horror."

A melancholy figure, Carter is a quiet contemplative dreamer with a sensitive disposition, prone to fainting during times of emotional stress. But he can also be courageous, with enough strength of mind and character to face and foil horrific creatures.  Interestingly, Carter also served in the French Foreign Legion.  He also possesses the Silver Key and is rumored to be a distant cousin of Captain John Carter of Virginia.

Professor Laban Shrewsbury

Laban Shrewsbury is an anthropologist and professor of philosophy at Miskatonic University. Although he was born in Wisconsin, Shrewsbury spent most of his life in Arkham, Massachusetts. After publishing his first book, the controversial Investigation into the Myth-Patterns of the Latter-Day Primitives with Especial Reference to the R'lyeh Text, in 1870, Shrewsbury mysteriously disappeared. Shortly thereafter, a posthumous collection of his writings, titled Cthulhu Among the Victorians, saw publication. Just as mysteriously, Shrewsbury reappeared twenty years later and immediately began work on his next book, Cthulhu in the Necronomicon. Before he could complete this work, however, his home in Arkham was destroyed by an inexplicable fire in 1892. Shrewsbury was presumed dead and his unfinished volume was published as a posthumous work.
Shrewsbury had actually escaped to (REDACTED), fleeing certain horrors. Shrewsbury's manuscript, the Celaeno Fragments, remains under lock and key at Miskatonic's library.
